In pursuit of this goal, WRI is partnering in Meyer’s 2017 annual funding opportunity to fund projects that advance diversity, equity and inclusion within efforts to restore and protect the health of the Willamette River and its tributaries.

One way to gauge commitment to a community-driven restoration initiative: Host a conference in the middle of a snow and ice storm, and see how many people show up. Despite Mother Nature’s curveball, the Willamette River Initiative’s 4th biennial Within Our Reach conference drew a sold-out crowd of nearly 220 people to Oregon State University. A Meyer-funded coalition of people and groups united in pursuit of a strong, equitable cleanup of the Willamette River Superfund site scored a key victory this winter, when federal officials nearly doubled the amount of carcinogen-tainted sediment they plan to remove from the river bottom.

Today, WRI releases the first ever Willamette River Report Card. The Willamette’s overall grade - the grade that rolls up the 15 variables analyzed by the experts - came in at a B-. That’s good news for the river. But there are important problems we still need to solve in order to raise the grade.
